The Ultimate Lip Balm?

Smith's Strawberry Lip Balm

So my Ultimate Lip Balm Hunt has been stagnant and unsuccessful for a few years, as illustrated by the Dior Crème de Rose flop. However, the balm I’ve been using for the last few years has been working for me. I suppose that begs the question of why I’m on the hunt for a better one… I like lip balm, okay?

Smith's Strawberry Balm pot

Anyway, Smith’s Strawberry Lip Balm is what I’ve been using. It retails for under $10 (in either format). I got the pot form first and started using it as a bedtime/at-home lip balm. I’m not crazy about balms in pots in general because I don’t like having to dip my grubby fingers into it while I’m out. Lucky for me, this balm comes in a tube as well!

I recently picked up the tube and was happy to see that it’s exactly the same formula — same consistency, smell, all of it.

I like this balm because it’s super, super hydrating. It doesn’t make my lips go all flaky and weird, but actually penetrates the surface to deliver long-lasting hydration. It smells great — it’s a yummy artificial strawberry smell. My boyfriend says it smells like Skittles, and it totally does — like a mix of tropical Skittles. Yum.

It doesn’t taste like anything, which I like. I’m not a fan of sweet or flavoured lip balms — they kinda creep me out, and remind me that I’m constantly inadvertently eating a non-food all day long. I like to be blissfully unaware of my lip balm consumption, thanks.

Although it seems to have a pink tint, it goes on totally clear — no colour, no shimmer, nada. It does make lips pretty shiny though, and I’ve put it over particularly drying lipsticks (*cough* MAC RiRi Woo *cough*) to lend them some moisture.

If strawberry’s not your thing, this balm also comes in a rose flavour, as well as a minted rose flavour. They’re all available at Sephora in pot format, and I found the tube at Indigo Books (which is trying to be a department store, from the looks of the one I went in).

Overall, I’m really into this lip balm. I think I’ll try to stop the Ultimate Lip Balm Hunt because, on second consideration, I’m quite content with this one.

It’s important to note, however, that everybody’s lips are different. What works for me might not work for you, hence why, although everybody seems to live the Dior Crème de Rose, I couldn’t stand it. (Update: I returned it to Sephora.)
