Review: Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel in ‘Role Play’

Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel Collage

I am not a lipgloss person, nor am I a lipstick person day-to-day. I like lip balm, and not even tinted ones at that. Sometimes, if I’m feeling fancy, I’ll try a lipstick that feels like a balm, like a Chanel Coco Shine or a Revlon Lip Butter. Generally, though, for me, it’s either lip balm or bright lipstick. All or nothing.

But recently, I became interested in a lipstick colour that I could wear every day that would even out my lips and just make me look more polished and put together. I’ve never really had a lipstick like that. So I went into Sephora and asked for an MLBB colour: My Lips But Better.

My issue is that my lips are two different colours. The bottom one is pink with splotches of brown, and the top one is just brown. This makes it tough for me to choose a shade that’s their colour. However, I got help from an associate with the same situation going on.

Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel in Role Play

She chose a few different colours for me, and in the end, Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel in the colour Role Play is what I chose.

I was delightfully surprised by this product. I’ve tried a few products from Marc Jacbos’ line and disliked the polish and concealer, but liked the blush. This one’s another hit.

The packaging is gorgeous — shiny and luxe, with a magnetized cap that snaps on and stays there. As you can see from the swatch, the product itself is extremely pigmented — to get the look I like, I only have to dab the colour on, and I don’t use a lip liner.

My only complaint is that the formula is quite dry. If I don’t layer a balm or gloss over the top, my lips are cracking and peeling in a few hours. However, for a line that also has matching lip glosses (in their signature gel formula) and a balm, it’s no surprise that they made their lipstick drying — it’s marketing, like making snacks too salty at a baseball game.

The lipstick itself is quite pricy, and not quite as moisturizing as I’d like. So will I be purchasing more from this line? Probably not. But I am happy with what I have and will be using it nearly daily!

  1. Never thought of it like that before… making a lipstick drying so you will buy a complimentary lip gloss!! Role Play looks like a nice color, though. I’m still debating whether I should pick one up to try as I’ve been hearing mixed reviews.

Tell me what you think!
