New & Exciting Products

As a lover of all things beauty, I keep my eyes open for new launches. I don’t like to buy items right away, because that’s when I tend to regret the products the most. Like some kind of makeup-crazed lion, I like to lie in wait of the inevitable onslaught of YouTube and blog reviews (check the links in the sidebar for my trusted sources!). Nonetheless, I still get excited about the products when they’re launched and in the starting stages of release. Here are a few I’m currently excited about!

My Eyebrow Threading Experience

My brows the day after threading, unfilled.

I’m relatively new to the world of eyebrow upkeep. It was only a year or two that I got my brows waxed for the first time. Then I moved, and didn’t bother finding someone to do them for me. It wasn’t until this past summer that I started going to get them waxed regularly, every 4-6 weeks.
I always thought that I didn’t have enough eyebrow hair to warrant removing any, but as it turns out, shaping my brows (and filling them in) a little has resulted in it looking like I’m browier than I actually am.

My brows were in desperate need of some attention, and there’s a new threading brow bar called Kurves at the mall where I work. So after my shift a few days ago, I headed over and got my brows threaded for the very first time!

Review: CoverGirl Clump Crusher Extensions mascara

CoverGirl Clump Crusher Extensions

CoverGirl has finally delved into the world of fibre mascaras, and let me tell you, they’ve done it right.

Expanding on their ever-growing Lashblast range, this spring they brought out the Clump Crusher. The big draw with this mascara was that the little rubbery spokes (is that what they’re called?) of the brush were spaced closer together than the average mascara clump, making clumps physically impossible. (If that’s not a practical use of math and science, I don’t know what is.)

Anyway, I tried the original Clump Crusher and loved it. It defined my lashes, added volume, and was just generally lovely. However, it wasn’t the best in the length department, and I felt the need to layer a fibre mascara (namely Maybelline Illegal Lengths) on top of it.

With Clump Crusher Extensions, they’ve kept the epic brush but tweaked the formula. The fibres in the mascara are so tiny that you can barely see them clinging to the brush (I can pick one out in the photo above). When you apply it, it adds some serious length to lashes and is fantastic at separating.

The first time I used this, I chucked my old Maybelline Illegal Lengths in the trash (it was due to be ditched anyway, but I was that impressed with this new mascara!). The Maybelline fibre mascara adds length, but sometimes if you try to build the tips too much, you end up with weird, twiggy, spidery lashes. (I’ve experienced this problem with the Imju Fiberwig Mascara too, which I still loved for a very long time). CoverGirl’s amazing Clump Crusher brush and teeny, tiny fibres do away with the twig-spider-leg look and makes lashes look long, separated, and…human.

The only thing is that the formula seems to have suffered in the volume department, but I’m willing to sacrifice that for the crazy length and separation. I’m just loving it.

And I picked it up for $8 on sale! Whee!

If you’re on the hunt for an awesome new mascara to try, CoverGirl Clump Crusher Extensions is pretty fantastic and definitely worth a try!

theBalm on Hautelook: Loves & Wishes!

So theBalm is on Hautelook until Monday morning at 8am Pacific time. For those of you who don’t know, Hautelook is a designer discount website owned by Nordstrom. They have a lot of brand-name items, including beauty items, at deeply discounted prices. How it works is they have sales – called ‘events’ – for specific periods of time. I’ve gotten theBalm items from them before, and I’ve also gotten Urban Decay.

I haven’t tried a ton of their products, but what I have tried, I really really like. So, I thought I’d make a list of things I love and things I’d love to try!

But wait, there’s more!

Meow! The Basic Cat-Eye (& thoughts on Brian Griffin)

Tools for Cat Eye

Exotic. Elegant. Elusive.

The perfect cat-eye is a tricky thing to master.

I’ve been practicing mine for about four years now, and I’ve just recently become super comfortable with it. Even so, I do mess it up sometimes, at which point I aggressively take a makeup wipe to my face to try to erase all evidence of it.

Review: Maybelline 24hr Colour Tattoos

Maybelline Colour Tattoos

So when these cream shadows came onto the market a few years back, everybody flipped out. Particular shades were virtually impossible to find because they sold out so fast (I’m looking at you, Bad to the Bronze!) and as they released more shades, those got snapped up quickly too.

When you try one out, it’s easy to see why Maybelline 24hr Colour Tattoo cream eyeshadows are so popular. They come in tons of pretty colours, ranging from neutrals to pigmented brights and darks to a silvery white. They stay on well. All that for under $10? Omg.

Rimmel ScandalEyes Eyeliner in Beige

Rimmel ScandalEyes

One of the classic tricks in makeup is to put white eyeliner on the lower waterline to make your eyes look wider and more awake.

Well, I’ve tried it. And maybe it’s because I have darker skin, but it just made me look like a crazy.

I’ve found that, regardless of your skin-tone, you can achieve a less unearthly “awake” effect by opting for a beige liner instead.

Layer It On! My Mascara Routine

Mascara Routine edited

So anyone who’s had a beauty-related discussion with me pretty much knows that I am eyelash obsessed.

Honestly, my lashes kinda suck. They’re thin, pretty short, and super straight. Bleh.

Consequently, I’ve been on a hunt – kinda like my HG Lip Balm Quest – to find the ultimate mascara. I want it to define, separate, thicken, lengthen, and hold a curl…but I don’t want it to be too hard to remove.

So far, I haven’t found one that does all these things all in one. Solution? Layer three different mascaras that do three different things!
