That Scary Blush

Nars Exhibit A Full Product Photo

Let me preface this by saying that I love neutrals, in clothing and in makeup. Makeup artists always steer me towards colour because folks with dark skin can pull of vibrant shades a bit easier than those with very light skin. So maybe it’s the rebel in me that makes me shy away from colour, or maybe it’s just because I feel best in shades of brown, bronze, and beige. In terms of blush, I love my plummy pinks and peaches as much as the next makeup-obsessed human. But since I first saw it, I’ve always been equal parts intrigued and terrified of one blush in particular: Nars Exhibit A. Read more!

The Early-Class Makeup Edit

School Makeup Essentials

I’ve found myself in a bit of a makeup rut lately, largely because I usually do my makeup around 7:30 every morning. I’m so not a morning person that I usually don’t feel particularly creative or adventurous. Read more!

The $4 Blush

ELF HD Blush Superstar

There’s something about a super-affordable makeup brand that frequently gets products right that makes me feel weak in the knees.

That’s probably an unhealthy reaction, but that’s okay – I’m going with it. Read more!

Nars Blush in ‘413 Blkr’

Nars 413 Blkr Blush pan

When the 413 Blkr collection came out to celebrate their opening of a new flagship store (I believe that’s the situation), I wasn’t all that interested. I felt like the 413 Blkr blush* in particular I could dupe in my collection and didn’t really need another of. Read more!

Nars Matte Multiple in ‘Exumas’

NARS Matte Multiple Exumas

I remember when Nars released their first round of Multiples. I was really into Orgasm blush back then – to this day it remains the only blush I’ve ever hit pan on. But I remember looking at the Orgasm Multiple and thinking, “holy glittercakes, Batman.”

Okay so maybe I didn’t really think that, but I never really found most of the original Multiples all that appealing because they are full of glitter. [Read more…]

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Dim Infusion

Hourglass wide shot
In the summer, I saved up and bought an Ambient Lighting Powder and it is one of the best makeup items I’ve purchased. It really makes a difference in how my skin looks.

So when I found out about the Ambient Lighting Blushes, I knew I wanted one. I had a hard time spending $40+ on one blush, but I had a cream blush that I wanted to return anyhow, so that took a few dollars off the price.

And am I ever glad that I got this. Read more!

Chiaroscuro: How to Contour and Highlight

Contour Highlight Blush Collage

All my artists out there, you know what’s up.

The fancy term is from my grade 9 art class. Chiaroscuro means creating strong contrast between light and dark.

In the makeup world, the way to do that is with contour and highlight. Contouring means creating dark areas that appear to recede, usually using a bronzer or contour product (in cream or powder form). Highlighting uses a light or shimmery product to make certain areas of your face ‘pop’.

The usual way to do this is by contouring your cheekbones, temples, and jawline. I then like to highlight my nose, cheeks, and Cupid’s bow.

Here’s a step-by-step of how I like to do it, complete with weird faces! Read more!

Review: Benefit Rockateur

Benefit Rockateur box

Today marks the beginning back-to-normal, daily blogging. I had a nice holiday season and am super excited to be back. Hooray!

To kick off a new year of regular blogging, I’ll be reviewing a fairly new product that’s still quite hot at the moment: Benefit Rockateur blush.

Benefit Rockateur is marketed as a rose gold blush. Like other Benefit boxed powders, it is scented and it comes with a flat but slightly fluffy brush in it (that I don’t use it and don’t find to be particularly good).

theBalm on Hautelook: Loves & Wishes!

So theBalm is on Hautelook until Monday morning at 8am Pacific time. For those of you who don’t know, Hautelook is a designer discount website owned by Nordstrom. They have a lot of brand-name items, including beauty items, at deeply discounted prices. How it works is they have sales – called ‘events’ – for specific periods of time. I’ve gotten theBalm items from them before, and I’ve also gotten Urban Decay.

I haven’t tried a ton of their products, but what I have tried, I really really like. So, I thought I’d make a list of things I love and things I’d love to try!

But wait, there’s more!
